Converting our AR Dots to Lexile Reading Levels

updated charts w/ blank

We are getting ready for our next SEP conferences next week and my cute co-workers and I were discussing how we could get our parents on board with LEXILE reading levels vs. AR reading levels.  Sadly, we lost our AR this year... we are missing the accountability and motivation that it gave to all the students, however, we've been told it's history!
All of our library books were labeled with color dots on the spine of the book for easy choosing.  Many teachers did the same thing in their classroom libraries to enable the students to easily get a "good choice" book. We thought it was a good idea to help the parents see the connection between their student's SRI reading scores and LEXILE level.
We converted a chart to match Creekside's leveled colors (dots).
We plan to discuss this with our parents and students at SEPS... hopefully clearing things up a bit and getting us all on the same playing field.
Fingers crossed!!

Meet Stella!!

My sweet friend, Janiel Wagstaff did it again!!
She has created an adorable series to help us teach 3 writing types to our kiddos. I was lucky enough to review her original manuscripts and I was so impressed and excited to  add them to my writing tools.
    Here's the scoop!
Meet Stella, an eager second grader. In this lively series of three, 32-page illustrated picture books, you'll find effective and engaging ways to teach and model the three writing types outlined in the standards: opinion, informative, and narrative. Each title includes several suggestions real writers use to craft effective writing, cleverly presented through the eyes of a second grader. Teachers are clamoring for explicit resources for teaching the standards, and these books provide a unique tool, both practical and fun, to inform that teaching.
I am so proud of her...
so happy for her accomplishment
and thrilled to use them in my class.

Purchase your own set here!!

The Mitten

Today Mrs. Evans needed to be daughter to her father.
My dad has Alzheimer's and is in his final stages.
My amazing mother is taking care of his every need 24/7... but
it is taking a toll on her.
Monday night, my siblings and I decided we needed a quick pow-wow to
assess her needs and dad's.  We made a long term plan and short term plan.

(love my dad!)
One part of the short term planning was Lory spending the following day with dad at the house while mom got out.  It was a nice day for all involved.

I was grateful for this little file...
I had it copied, laminated, cut out and in a "just-in-case" box.
Quickly I was able to provide the sub with ELA, Math, Reading and Art
...all tied to the darling Jan Brett literature.

I was able to be where I really needed and wanted to be...
AND my students still had a great, productive fun day!

If The Mitten is a favorite of yours OR you want to fill your "just-in-case" box
this file might be what you're looking for.

Term 3 is finally posted and term 4 is around the corner.
I am so glad your students are enjoying and learning from these daily spirals.
I love the quick, daily review and simple conversations we have while completing them... it makes me happy you do, too.

Thank you for leaving your comments and feedback (yeah TpT credits ;)
I read them and take them to heart!

Similes and Related Facts

We've been learning about Similes this week and we've had a lot of fun reading good literature, comparing 2 different things, giggling at our creativity and writing a few similes of our own.

We also had a great time learning about related facts...
robots always make things exciting!!

I believe we are ready for next week's lessons of fact families.

My picture is a personal one today...
We had a wonderful Christmas break in Utah.

In my Utah classroom we are becoming familiar with our new McGraw Hill WONDERS reading program.  Today I want to show and share with you something that has made it really nice and thorough BUT extremely easy.  It is a 1 page printable
(folded into a tri-fold) that covers all of the above standards each week.
 It keeps me accountable,
 guides my planning and
 the kids really enjoy them.
We do them together as a class... with a bit of discussion and interaction.

The idea can obviously be used with any reading program...
 for those using WONDERS,
click  to grab Unit 3 tri-folds.
