I've received a few comments and questions about my Work on Writing during Daily 5 and my Write On activities... so since I'm stuck with a sinus infection and not moving around too much... I thought I'd take a minute to answer the questions.
I'm finishing up my first year doing DAILY 5 and I LOVE it!
I am so excited to try it again next year.
I believe all of my students have become more independent, responsible, happy readers and writers.
During Work on Writing... my kiddos choose one of the 6 boxes above to take to their desks.
Inside it has cards showing different things they can write:
postcard
story
card
list
letter
recipe
poem
book...
It also has Write On cards held together with a silver ring in the corner.
Throughout the year, I've created new ones for different holidays/months etc.
Each box has a ring with 40 Write On ideas.
These have really helped the kids focus on a topic and create nice sentences.
The words on the card help them imagine actions and opportunities that might arise with the topic they have chosen. Have key words has allowed them to focus on their creativity rather than get stuck on the spelling aspect of the writing activity.
They have created darling fiction and non-fiction writings in their writing notebooks.
Last week, I said to the group in between rotations... "Who is going to let me keep their Work On Writing Journal? I'd love to show the students next year the fabulous work that has been completed during Daily 5." In chorus they said, "Not mine... I want to take it home!" Aug!
That's a positive and a negative!! ;)
Each Write On file contains the card above (on the silver ring) showing 12 words that go along with the file topic, 12 individual showing each of the words that the kids can manipulate or put in ABC order etc. It also has a mini book for the kids to fold... they can practice their syllables, ABC order and sentence structure. Finally, there are 2 writing forms with handwriting lines for the kids to create their writing on.
Many have requested that I group the Write On... together, so I've put them into 4 sets:
